You don’t need better goals, you need clearer values!
The reason you struggle to hit your goals has nothing to do with the goals themselves.
There’s nothing wrong with being overly ambitious, there’s nothing wrong with setting too many goals…
It’s just that sometimes, we set goals that aren’t quite connected to, or aligned with, the things we truly want in our lives:
Our values
Setting goals without identifying the values they’re tied to is almost a pointless endeavour!
Because the reality is that the minute that things get hard, we’ll find it easy to drop the goal and be okay with it.
However, when we connect a goal to its inherent value – the thing that matters to us most, that that goal brings us closer to – it becomes impossible to ignore.
Values are the compass that enable us to move towards the things we care about.
Goals are the landmarks we visit along the way.
You can walk East but you’ll never “get to” East; but you can arrive at specific destinations that are in the direction you’re moving in.
It’s a lot harder to get to the landmarks without a compass; and it’s a lot easier to lose sight of the landmark when you don’t have a compass guiding you in the right direction.
Identifying values is one of the first thing I do when working with clients, because it informs the entire purpose of our journey toghether, whether that be in coaching x psych, or just in applied sport/exercise psychology.
